The Unauthorized Blog of John Mayer

Will Blu-Ray discs work in my HD DVD player?

By John Mayer

Bio & Blog

Normally I'm fielding questions from fans, like "I'm 14, will I find true love?" or "John, how do you know so much about life and love?" or "Will Qtrax be available for Mac soon?" If it has to do with music, Macs, or love, usually I can answer it. But I guess I need to admit that I'm stumped when it comes to hooking up electronic equipment, so I'm coming to you, News Groper readers, for the answer. My other blogs that I am constantly abandoning and then rejuvenating are only read my obsessive girl fans, and they wouldn't know what Blu-Ray was anyway.

So, I recently bought an HD DVD player because Best Buy was selling them all for really cheap, like they were almost giving them away. I bought a really nice one for only $1. How cool is that? But I'm having a problem. I got an advance copy of my newest DVD on Blu-Ray about a month ago (I had to pay extra), and it's not playing in my HD DVD player. What's happening?

I mean, I thought Blu-Ray was, by definition, high definition. I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to these things. I have my stuff hooked up right but the screen is not showing anything, and it keeps ejecting the disc. Did I get a faulty HD DVD player or are all these new John Mayer DVDs faulty? Help! Normally this is the kind of thing Jessica Simpson was good at, but she's not around anymore.

HD-DVD players and Blu-Ray DVD players, are both high definition quality. However, they are both very different technologies. They are 2 different formats, they were essentially battling it out to become the stanard. Blu-Ray won and now retailers need to get rid of their HD-DVD players, because noone is going to make HD-DVDs anymore. For your blue-ray disc, you need a Blu-Ray player which is going to run you about $400 last I checked (3 months ago). If you're looking for a Blu-Ray player, get a PlayStation 3. They play Blu-Ray and cost the same as a normal player, but you get a video game console as well.

Sorry for the bad news about your HD-Player.

The good news is, that you CAN get some really cheap HD DVDs if you look for them. the Bad News is that they will not play Blu-Rays discs unless you get a Combo player which can play both. LG is the most popular brand for this capability. Otherwise , like the other poster mentioned the PS3 is your best bet for Blu-Ray today. I would wait though and see if Blu-Ray is still around this time next year!

It's like having a Fender and a Squier, it's the same thing (HD) but, in two different formats (Blu-Ray - HD-DVD), as you know the other one is better ; )
